Environmental Life-Cycle Assessment for Asphalt Pavements: Issues and Recommended Future Directions
نویسندگان
چکیده
Life-Cycle Assessment (LCA) analyzes the total energy and resource requirements and environmental impact of human-designed systems. Both policymakers and industry have shown a great deal of interest in applying LCA as a decision-making criterion during planning and design for new pavement construction, and maintenance and rehabilitation activities. This interest results from two different perspectives: first, from recognition that pavement activities have effects on the environment, which must first be evaluated before they can be minimized to improve pavement system sustainability; and second, from a perception that competitive advantage can come from “green marketing” through improved pavement sustainability. This paper provides a brief overview of LCA and identifies the most important unresolved issues and gaps in the application of LCA to pavements. Based on this review, recommendations are made for improving the scientific viability of LCA when applied to pavements, including how to implement pavement LCA and key research needs for improving its validity and accuracy.

The subject of this paper is an environmental life cycle assessment (LCA) and life cycle cost analysis (LCCA) of processes needed to construct and maintain representative Swiss asphalt, concrete, and composite pavements (including subbase layers) applicable for the Swiss national road network over a period of 75 years. The environmental indicators analyzed are the global warming potential indic...

The public, industry, and governments have become increasingly interested in green design and sustainable development. Construction activities affect the environment significantly, so environmental issues should be considered seriously. Thousands of miles of roads are paved every year with asphalt and steel-reinforced concrete. What are the environmental effects of the two materials? If asphalt...

The Life-Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a standardized procedure generally used, in Italy, in industrial engineering to evaluate the economic-environmental efficiency of production processes. LCA is aimed at optimizing the design, with special emphasis on environmental sustainability. Also in the construction sector, LCA has recently gained a fundamental role as a quantitative measurement tool able ...
متن کاملLife Cycle Assessment of Pavements under a Changing Climate
Each of pavements’ life cycle phases such as material extraction, transportation, construction, operation, rehabilitation, and end-of-life emits greenhouse gases. Such emissions can be influenced by climate change via changes in the rates of pavement deterioration and thus intensity and frequency of maintenance and rehabilitation. However, climate change has not been given full considerations i...

The high contribution of CO 2 emissions associated with pavements has driven research to assess the life cycle of concrete versus asphalt structures and to develop a strategy to reduce the carbon footprint. The life cycle of pavement has been studied with respect to CO 2 emissions in the use phase of concrete as well as after the concrete is demolished. However, only a few have considered the e...
